Can You Help Me Find…?

I am asking this question here because it has bugged me for months and I simply can’t find what I’m looking for! If you can help, please do!

At home, I have bags of ground coffee, as any decent person would do. Unfortunately, I don’t tend to drink very much coffee and I do not have a coffee grinder, so my coffee tends to lose its flavour before I finish it. Of course, once a bag of coffee is open, it starts to degrade. I know you can put your coffee in a freezer, but I don’t like that approach. I know you can put your coffee in an airtight pot, but that pot still has oxygen in, which reacts with the coffee and still makes it degrade, although smaller jars reduce this effect a little.

So, what I really want is an airtight jar with an air extractor of some description. You must be able to buy one somewhere. I know you can buy them for wine. You simply get a device that fits in the neck of the bottle, and then manually pump the air out of the bottle before placing it in the fridge. That way, the wine doesn’t oxidise and go off at anywhere near the rate it would otherwise.

So, really, I’m after a similar device that you can use with a pot your can store coffee in. Has anyone come across one? Any ideas where I could find one? Any help gratefully appreciated…

    Hi Noel

Lakeland doesn’t seem to make the tub that we have any more but this one looks similar.
Failing that, buy a grinder. Not too expensive and your coffee will always be fresh.

Glad your holiday was good. I enjoyed your tweets about it.

Can’t help with the coffee pump but you could store your coffee in an empty wine bottle and use a wine bottle pump.

Thanks Fiona, glad you enjoyed my Tweets too. It was nice to get away and I met a few wonderful people too!

Matt, wine bottle and pump could also work, very resourceful! Know any places in the West End that would sell that?

Only concern with the wine bottle approach is that you might result with coffee with just a hint of wine flavouring…

Well, you *can* wash the bottle first!
